Speaking at the Dignity Health Sports Park ahead of the 2024 MLS Cup final, MLS Commissioner Don Garber highlighted the league’s remarkable growth over the years. Garber reflected on the journey since the establishment of the first dedicated soccer complex, saying, “Think about what that means. This week, we broke ground on NYCFC’s new stadium in Queens – over 10 years in the making. When that stadium, along with Inter Miami’s new stadium, comes online, we will have 28 soccer stadiums that have been built, which is remarkable.”
The league has made significant strides in infrastructure and expansion, with newer stadiums reinforcing its standing in major markets. However, Garber acknowledged that challenges, including roster spending transparency and assessing the Apple TV partnership’s impact, remain.
Potential MLS Schedule Changes Looming
Garber also touched on potential scheduling changes, especially with two major FIFA tournaments— the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup—on the horizon. While confirming MLS will not operate during the 2026 World Cup and will take a break for the 2025 Club World Cup, Garber noted ongoing discussions about a possible transition to a fall-to-spring calendar.
“It’s complicated,” Garber said. “We’re across three time zones, multiple weather factors, and traveling across a continent. Making those changes is something we’ve got to be very, very thoughtful about.” Although no decisions have been finalized, the league is exploring options to align with global football standards.
