Bordeaux Faces Major Setback After FSG Takeover Collapse

The former Ligue 1 side, Bordeaux, has been hit with devastating news following the collapse of a potential takeover by Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). This development marks a significant downturn in the club’s fortunes, adding to their ongoing financial woes.

Financial Struggles and the FSG Takeover

Bordeaux, a six-time French champion, has been grappling with financial difficulties for several years. The club had been pinning its hopes on a takeover by FSG to alleviate these issues and prevent further penalties. However, after extended negotiations, FSG decided to pull out of the deal, leaving Bordeaux in a precarious position.

Relegation and Loss of Professional Status

As a result of the failed takeover, Bordeaux has accepted relegation to the third tier of French football. This administrative demotion means that the club will no longer operate as a professional entity, a status they have held since 1937. This is a significant blow to a club with such a storied history in French football.

Official Statement from Bordeaux

In a statement released earlier this week, Bordeaux addressed the failed takeover and their subsequent actions:

“While discussions had resumed in recent days, FSG representatives indicated yesterday Monday July 22 to FC Girondins de Bordeaux and its shareholder their desire not to follow through despite the assurances provided by various stakeholders.

“Therefore, in the absence of new elements, FC Girondins de Bordeaux withdrew the appeal lodged against the decision of the DNCG dated July 9, 2024. As a result, FC Girondins de Bordeaux accepts the sanction of administrative demotion within the National 1 Championship for the 2024/2025 season and will be summoned again to present its budget to the DNCG.”

The collapse of the FSG takeover deal marks a significant turning point for Bordeaux, a club once at the pinnacle of French football. The relegation and loss of professional status are severe setbacks, reflecting the deep financial and administrative challenges the club faces. As Bordeaux prepares to compete in the National 1 Championship, the future remains uncertain, and the club’s ability to recover from this blow will be closely watched by its supporters and the broader football community.
