Danny Rose Opens Up on His Time Under Jose Mourinho at Spurs
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has shed light on his short-lived experience working under Jose Mourinho. Speaking on Kyle Walker’s BBC Sounds podcast, Rose reflected on the tactical differences, their professional relationship, and his dissatisfaction with a recorded conversation featured in Spurs’ Amazon documentary All or Nothing.
Rose and Mourinho: A Brief and Professional Relationship
Danny Rose revealed that his time under Jose Mourinho lasted just 8-10 weeks, making it difficult to establish a personal connection with the manager.
“I only really worked under him for eight or 10 weeks, so I didn’t really have a relationship with him,” Rose shared. “It was just a normal player/manager relationship: ‘Hello, good morning, how are you?'”
Despite the lack of animosity, Rose acknowledged that Mourinho’s tactical system signaled the end of his playing days at Spurs.
Tactical System Didn’t Suit Rose
Mourinho’s preference for a three-centre-back system with a defensive left-sided player conflicted with Rose’s attacking style.
“My game was that I enjoyed being offensive, and his system was the left-sided player would be a centre-back and not go forward. So my days were numbered at the club when he wanted to adopt that approach,” Rose explained.
This tactical shift limited his chances of regaining a starting role, ultimately leading to his exclusion from the squad.
Controversy Over Recorded Office Conversation
Rose also expressed his frustration with a filmed conversation between him and Mourinho featured in the Amazon documentary. The scene showed Rose questioning his lack of playing time, but the former defender claims he was unaware of being recorded at the time.
“That conversation you see on the documentary is a completely normal conversation,” he said. “When I have gone to knock on the door, I was assuming there were no cameras in the office. I didn’t know that. I didn’t get notified until May that they had got this and were putting it in, so I wasn’t happy. I had to get legal advice.”
The incident left Rose upset, as he felt blindsided by the inclusion of private discussions in the documentary.
Danny Rose’s insights reveal the challenges players face when tactical shifts affect their role in a team. His candid remarks about his time under Mourinho also highlight the impact of media portrayals on players’ experiences. While his Spurs career may have ended on a controversial note, Rose’s reflections provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics between players and managers.
