Ian Wright Criticizes Manchester United Over Lack of Support for Women’s Team
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has voiced his concerns about Manchester United’s approach to their women’s team, accusing the club of neglecting the progress of the women’s side despite their impressive performances. Wright also took aim at Manchester United Women’s manager Marc Skinner, questioning his tactics and leadership following a disappointing result.
Wright Calls Out United’s Priorities
Speaking on the Crossways podcast, Wright accused Manchester United of sidelining their women’s team in favor of the men’s side, which is currently struggling for form. He remarked:
“When you hear murmurings of Man United saying ‘once we sort out the men’s, we’re gonna focus on the women’s’ – when is that going to be? You look at the men’s and how far they are off it at the minute.”
Wright expressed frustration at what he perceives as a lack of care from the club:
“I genuinely believe, especially with how Man United Women are playing, they do not care. They genuinely do not care enough.”
Criticism of Marc Skinner’s Management
Wright was equally critical of Manchester United Women’s manager Marc Skinner, particularly after a recent match against Aston Villa. He called out Skinner’s post-match comments, which Wright described as uninspiring and lacking tactical direction.
“Unfortunately for him, the interview he did the other day didn’t stand him in good stead. What he’s saying, in respect of new players, the team gelling – he’s had this team for long enough now where they should be doing a lot better.”
Wright also questioned Skinner’s ability to adapt, pointing out the lack of a “plan B” or coherent structure during matches:
“They were playing against a Villa side that were bottom of the league and he’s talking about they got a good result – at home.”
Praise for Fans’ Accountability
Wright commended Manchester United Women’s fans for holding Skinner accountable. He compared Skinner’s post-match comments to something out of a sitcom:
“This is why I was quite pleased to see Man United fans pull him up about that interview and how David Brent-ish it was for me.”
Ian Wright’s criticism of Manchester United highlights broader issues regarding the club’s commitment to women’s football and the managerial approach of Marc Skinner. As women’s football continues to grow globally, Wright’s comments serve as a stark reminder that clubs must invest equally in both their men’s and women’s teams. For Manchester United, addressing these concerns could be crucial in maintaining their reputation and supporting their women’s side to achieve greater success.
