Luis Enrique Discusses Press Obligations Ahead of PSG’s Clash with Rennes

Enrique Enjoys Working with the Media but Would Sacrifice Salary to Skip Interviews, Ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Ligue 1 match against Rennes, head coach Luis Enrique made candid remarks about his relationship with the press during a pre-match press conference. The Spanish manager shared his thoughts on media obligations, stating that while he enjoys interacting with the press, he would willingly sacrifice a portion of his salary to avoid post-match interviews.

What Enrique said

“I have a great time with you all, I get on well with the press,” Enrique said. “But if the choice was left up to me, I would have no issue with it. But I’ve never cut a press conference short, I say what I have to say, and sometimes in other languages – not very well, but I do it.”

The Cost of Press Obligations

Enrique went on to explain that if given the option, he would sign a contract to relinquish 25% to 50% of his salary in exchange for not having to participate in press conferences. However, he acknowledged that this isn’t feasible due to contractual obligations that bind managers to media duties. Despite these requirements, Enrique emphasized that he tries to make the best of the situation, particularly in post-match interviews, even when he’s low on energy.

“It was a spontaneous comment, and it’s true – if right now you were to hand me a piece of paper that said I wouldn’t have to speak to the press anymore in return for giving up 25%, or even 50%, of my salary, then I would sign it. But it wouldn’t be possible, because the contracts that the clubs have signed include an obligation for managers to speak.”

A Lighthearted Approach to Media Interactions

Despite his preference to avoid media obligations, Enrique made it clear that he still enjoys his interactions with journalists. He concluded his remarks on a lighthearted note, reinforcing that while media duties are not his favorite part of the job, he maintains a positive relationship with the press.

“Personally, I enjoy it, but if I could avoid it I would – especially post-match interviews, when I don’t really have the energy. I’ll say it again, though, I have a good time with you guys.”

Luis Enrique’s comments highlight the challenges managers face with media obligations, particularly in high-pressure environments like PSG. While he would prefer to avoid these duties, his commitment to fulfilling his contractual obligations and maintaining a positive relationship with the press is evident. As PSG prepares for their clash with Rennes, Enrique’s candidness offers a glimpse into the less glamorous aspects of being a top football manager.
